Sebastopol Free University of the Long Now …
Professor Dorothy Freidel from SSU will talk about the Little Ice Age, which brought bitterly cold winters to many parts of the world. In the 17th century, glaciers in the Swiss Alps advanced, gradually engulfing farms and crushing entire villages. The harsh winter of 1794-1795 aided the French invasion army under Pichegru, so they could march on the frozen rivers of the Netherlands while the Dutch fleet was stuck in the ice in Den Helder harbor. New York harbor froze in the winter of 1780, making it possible for people to stroll from Manhattan to Staten Island.
