"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

Quality of Life and The New Smart Economy
Despite the many differences residents of Sonoma County may have, there is one thing we all share in common—we want a better quality of life. Quality of life can mean different things to different people. But most people agree that having a strong local economy is a major influence. After all, we all want good jobs for ourselves and our neighbors.
The new smart economy creates higher quality of life for all residents. It starts with you and the few simple choices you make every day about purchases.
You Can Help Create the New ‘Smart Economy’—Shift your spending to local businesses first
The average Sonoma County household spends slightly more than $60,000 a year on goods and services. If all of that were spent with local goods and services providers, then an estimated $15,000 or 25% more per average household would re-circulate in Sonoma County. That's $2.3 billion every year.
So, what can you do? We may be idealistic, but we're not unrealistic. We're asking you to shift some of your purchasing to locally owned businesses.
Here's a simple example. The next time you head to a grocery store, consider going to Oliver's Market, Pacific Market, Andy's Produce Market or Community Market. They offer a great selection of local products at very competitive prices. Let's say you spend $200 per week on groceries. When you shop at those markets, about $50 more stays in Sonoma County than if you went to a grocery store that is owned by a company outside Sonoma County. That adds up to $2,600 a year you have contributed to your community.
GoLocal and our GoLocal Rewards program can help you shift your purchasing, which means you can contribute to our local economy without spending more, just spend smarter.
Think of it as enlightened self-interest 2.0. You’ll do something good for the community and save money for yourself. We estimate about $500 savings per $10,000 you spend. After all, during these economic hard times, aren't we all getting just a little smarter about economics and how it all works?

Why would anyone pay $25 to "go local"? You can do that without paying $25. I really think that you would get more people on board with this idea if you didn't charge consumers. People are biting it right now......they're not going to want to spend more money than they have to.
Reply from GoLocal:
Laurel, thanks for asking. Sounds like you might be interested in saving money on your local purchases and support the cause of going local.
As a GOLOCAL resident member, you'll receive a Rewards Card that saves you money on your purchases at GOLOCAL business members. Depending on 'how' local you are in your spending, you'll save many times the cost of membership. (See our business member directory on this site.)
Like most localistas, you sound committed to doing your part. You can do that without joining GOLOCAL. Membership helps us spread the word to the 450,000 residents of Sonoma County. Join if you can, but most importantly, choose local first. The more you spend with locally owned businesses, the more Sonoma County benefits and that returns benefits to you too.
A lot of people pay $40/year to join Costco. The $25 supports businesses to learn how to be better at marketing, make better business decisions, provide better service, etc. Many of the businesses using the Go Local rewards already offer loyalty rewards to their customers. This is just a loyalty program that you can take with you to other businesses because the rewards move throughout the network.
i just joined, how do i get the gift certificate to indigenous designs?
thanks!
Wow, so you guys really seem to want to squash anyone that has something argumentative to say about "GoLocal". My previous comment about this being bad for the local businesses due to them thriving on tourist money seems to have mysteriously been deleted... Interesting. Can you guys do something that does not promote people staying home? I mean millions of dollars are brought to Sonoma County by tourists that want to visit and tour wine country, but you seem to only want to encourage local money. So if wineries, hotels and B&Bs collapse due to your lack of support can we blame you?
FROM GOLOCAL in response:
We don't view your perspective as argumentative, it's just simply incorrect. We fully support businesses that serve tourists and visitors to Sonoma County, and we welcome and encourage people to visit this area. We're not sure where you are getting the notion that we don't support tourism and visitation to Sonoma County.
