It’s finally done and it looks beautiful. After more than a year of planning, painting, assembling, fund raising, sweat and tears, the Burbank Gardens Mural is finished.
At almost 600 feet, it covers the back fences of an entire block of our neighborhood, and reflects the pride we have in where we live.
Artist Jet Martinez finished the Mural last Fall with the help of over 30 volunteers including eight student coordinators who worked closely with him on the production.
With the help of two generous grants from the City of Santa Rosa, donations from over 80 individuals and 30 business, and a partnership with the Arts Council of Sonoma County and the GoLocal Cooperative, the Mural was a huge success.
Project Manager Judy Kennedy coordinated the Mural from start to finish. “She is a force of nature,” said Board Member Laura Fennell at the unveiling on October 10th (10-10-10) referring to Kennedy’s determination to see the project through to completion.
The Mural depicts 26 hybrids of Luther Burbank, our neighborhood’s namesake, in silhouettes with five special panels of residents and their homes.
Mayor Susan Gorin called the project “a true community effort, a cooperation of the City, the residents and businesses.”
Martinez joked at the unveiling that, “it looks like a Mexican serape,” referring to the color scheme; some have nick-named it the Rainbow Mural reflecting the diversity of our neighborhood. All in all, it’s a beautiful addition to the community.
