Time to sign up for a CSA this season!
Locally grown, freshly picked produce delivered weekly by GoLocal member Tierra Vegetables
April 21, 2011
Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. This is how it works: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.
Community Supported Agriculture helps to put you, the consumer, back in touch with the farmer and the land that grows the food that you put into your and your family’s body.
When you join a CSA program you are helping you and your family by eating the freshest locally grown possible produce without growing it yourself and helping your community by keeping diversified vegetable crops in Sonoma County. Tierra Vegetables has been growing our produce here for 30 years and are proud to feed hundreds of families every week. Food that is freshly picked is more nutritious and tastes better.
Here’s what some of their customers have said:
“It’s like Christmas every week.”
“My kids are eating broccoli “
“That’s the first time I ever saw him eat a carrot”
“Your food is so beautiful”
“I love all the recipes and eating new stuff”
What you get as a CSA member of Tierra Vegetables:
- A box of LOCALLY grown produce, grown right here in Sonoma County
- Eating the best vegetables and fruits you’ve ever tasted without growing them yourself
- Adventurous eating with some unusual and heirloom varieties of tomatoes, peppers squash, melons and others
- Satisfaction in helping keep diversified agriculture healthy in our beautiful county
- The “Menu” with recipes, serving suggestions, storing suggestions and lore
- Establishing community with your farmers and other CSA members
- Knowing exactly where your food is coming from, how it’s grown.
The season goes for 30 weeks from June until the end of December. Participants can pay by the month or for the full season. The contents in the boxes varies each week and is seasonal. A sample box in June would include strawberries, salad, carrots, beets, broccoli, summer squash and new potatoes. A box in August would have tomatoes, corn, basil, beans, melons and peppers. Each box includes the Menu with serving suggestions for each item and recipes using the contents of the box. A box feeds anywhere from one to four or five people. There are singles who eat a box and families who can’t keep up. The average, however, is two to three people.
