A base map is a great first step towards designing your dream garden. It is a map of your yard including existing trees and plants, pathways, buildings, or other non-landscapeable features and could include doors, windows, and downspouts. It can also include observations about the external influences on your yard like wind, rain, sound, fire, animals, etc, and observations about how the yard is used. Creating a base map and including observations is an important first step to be able to customize a landscape design that fits your specific needs and desires. Making a base map doesn't have to be complicated and we will explore a few options for how to make one, including some hands-on time using a measuring tape.
