About

Redwood Credit Union (RCU) is hosting its 8th annual free document shredding and security event for the community on Saturday, August 16th from 8:30 am to 12 pm at RCU’s Administrative Offices at 3033 Cleveland Avenue in Santa Rosa. The popular Shred-a-Thon event will include free document shredding provided by Integrity Shred and Cintas, as well as an electronic waste (eWaste) recycling center provided by Computer Recycling Center.

The event will also feature a free educational seminar on protecting yourself from online and credit/debit card fraudThe seminar begins at 10:00 am. All seminar attendees will be entered into a raffle drawing. For questions related to the seminar, contact seminars@redwoodcu.org or (707) 576-5259.

Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring canned food donations to benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

“RCU takes every precaution to ensure Members’ data is protected, and we see our annual Shred-a-Thon as an extension of that dedication to the broader community we serve,” said RCU President and CEO Brett Martinez. “Thousands of people have been able to safely and securely dispose of sensitive documents for free through this event, where many have learned the best ways to avoid risks like identity theft and fraud.”

One of the easiest and most effective precautions against identity theft is to shred documents that contain sensitive data, such as old financial statements, canceled checks, credit card offers and other outdated documents containing personal information. Attendees may bring up to 3 banker-sized boxes (15”x12”x10”) of documents for shredding. Acceptable items for eWaste recycling include computer components (CPUs, monitors, printers, ink cartridges), small office equipment (copiers and fax machines), personal electronics (cell phones, CD and DVD players, televisions) and more.

Participants in RCU’s annual Shred-a-Thon securely disposed of 28,000 pounds of documents and safely recycled nearly 9,000 pounds of eWaste items in 2013. Participants also donated 3,000 pounds of canned food last year, tripling the amount donated when RCU began taking food donations during the event in 2012.
