Background:

Natural foods entrepreneurs and brothers Ernie, Jim, and Marty Shelton opened Shelton's Natural Foods Market and Deli at 428 Center Street in Healdsburg in 2008. In addition to being a co-owner, Marty Shelton is the store's general manager. His wife, Bonnie Jean Shelton, is co-owner and community engagement coordinator.

Prior to establishing an operation in Healdsburg, Jim and Ernie Shelton were the founders and managers of Sonoma County's three Food for Thought markets, in Sebastopol, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa. Food for Thought set the bar high for organic and natural food stores in the North Bay region, being first to offer an in-store natural foods-focused prepared food deli at the Sebastopol store and an in-store bakery at the Yulupa Avenue store.

In February 2000, Whole Foods acquired all three Food for Thought markets. After the expiration of a five year non-compete agreement with Whole Foods, the Sheltons were approached with the idea of purchasing Anstead's Market, a community grocery store just two blocks north of the Healdsburg plaza. Shelton's is delighted to still count among their staff three employees who were Anstead's employees: Arte Whyte, Candace Selzer, and Benito Betello.

Shelton's features organic, natural, gluten-free and GMO-free selections in all departments as well as a full service deli, salad and soup bar, and a diverse selection of hot foods prepared daily. The store carries natural bath and body care products, a full line of supplements, homeopathic remedies, and several natural make-up lines.
