"I like to support causes I really believe in. What's this about?"
It's about community:
1) a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
2) a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
Local business owners are members of this community. They recirculate sales income in our local economy more so than nonlocal businesses.
The extreme, but all too familiar example, is online purchasing from nonlocal firms like Amazon. Your money leaves Sonoma County. By contrast, purchasing a book or pair of shoes from a local business keeps your money here longer. That's called the economic multiplier effect.
GO LOCAL fans, local residents, consider their values when making choices about where to buy things. They support our local economy by supporting our local businesses—keeping more money in recirculation for longer periods.
In many places, the dominant value is getting the lowest price. Oscar Wilde quipped that a cynic was 'a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.' GO LOCAL fans and members weigh community well-being equally with their own desires to save money on purchases.
The net result: shopping local makes our community more self-reliant and prosperous, which helps us weather the down economic times and prosper more in up times. Think of it as an enlightened self-interest.
More jobs are created. Donations to nonprofits rise.
